스컹크 - 다른 동물도 죽일 수 있는 최강의 악취
아메리카 대륙에서 가장 교활한 대형 육식동물은 퓨마입니다. 하지만 최고의 포식자인 퓨마가 대적하지 못하는 지독한 냄새로 무장한 동물이 있습니다. 바로 스컹크입니다. 퓨마가 공격하자 엉덩이에 있는 강력한 무기로 스컹크가 반격합니다. 괴성을 지르고 발을 구르면서 반항하며 꼬리를 흔듭니다. 단 한 번의 공격도 없이 냄새만으로 싸움이 끝냅니다. 스컹크가 1위를 차지한 이유는 단순히 지독한 냄새 때문만은 아닙니다. 스컹크는 상대를 괴롭게 하는데 스컹크의 화학 무기인 황이 함유된 티올 분자는 눈물이 나게 하는 양파의 화학 성분과 똑같기 때문입니다. 스컹크의 유독 가스는 포식자를 질식하게 하며 잠시 동안 눈을 멀게 하는데, 지독한 가스 때문에 개들이 목숨을 잃었던 사건도 있었습니다.
그리고 스컹크는 예리한 저격수입니다. 3m 넘게 떨어진 표적에 정확하게 명중시키는데, 빠른 속도로 연달아 6번을 분사할 수 있습니다.
Butanethiol, also known as butyl mercaptan, is a volatile, clear to yellowish liquid with a fetid (extremely foul-smelling) odor, commonly described as "skunk" odor. In fact, butanethiol is structurally similar to several major constituents of a skunk's defensive spray but is not actually present in the spray.[4] The scent of butanethiol is so strong that the human nose can easily detect it in the air at concentrations as low as 10 parts per billion. The threshold level for 1-butanethiol is reported as 1.4 ppb[5]
A seleno-mercaptan is an organic compound of the formula R-SeH. As such, it is an analogue of alcohols and thiols which contain oxygen and sulfur respectively in place of the selenium atom.
Seleno-mercaptans are toxic, as are the similar mercaptans (thiols), and notably foul-smelling, such that the Guinness Book of Records lists butyl seleno-mercaptan, a natural chemical produced by skunks (C4H9SeH), as a candidate for the foulest-smelling chemical.
