1.  occurance
     a. family of many proteins - humans have 162 fibronectin genes
    b. most common adhesive glycoproteins - about 5% carbohydrate
     c. widely distributed throughout animal kingdom
2. several forms of fibronectin
     a. soluble forms - found in blood
    b. insoluble forms (fibrils)  in ECM
    c. membrane bound forms connected to
specific receptors in PM - integrins
3. structure
     a. very large, complex protein
-each subunit is 2500 amino acids
                       -each subunit about 250,000 daltons
                       -series of "rodlike" domains
   b. two nearly identical chains joined   by two disulfides at C-terminus
    c. "rodlike" domains have discreet binding activities
                           - fibrin binding domain
                           - heparin binding domain
-binding domain for a  fibronectin receptor on the cell surface
                                    -links fibronectin to PM
                                    -integrins (see below)
                           -another fibrin binding domain
                           -collagen binding domain
-more heparin and fibrin binding domains
   d. fibronectin can bind to and crosslink   many  ECM  components
4. Functions of Fibronectin (FN)
    a. crosslinks and stabilizes other  components of ECM
    b. related to cell shape (see Figure 11-8)
-patterns of FN similar to patterns of microfilaments
   c. related to cell movement
-groups of embryonic cells follow a FN pathway
-FN guides macrophages into wound areas
    d. related to blood clotting
-soluble FN crosslinks platelets together  using membrane bound heparin
-soluble heparin  inhibits the crosslinking activity
                             - so, soluble heparin inhibits blood clotting
                             - heparin used in vivo and in vitro     to prevent coaggulation
